My Hard Drive

Another blog post brought you by my Comp 2 class. Because I have no time to write otherwise and this paper turned out blog post worthy.

------------------------------

It’s about as modern as an artifact can and yet it can hold so much history. My hard drive, which sits next to the family desktop computer, is one of my most valued possessions. It’s so important to me, that when the tornado siren goes off, that’s the first thing I grab on the way to the basement. But I supposed it’s not the actual device that really matters to me. As long as the content that is stored on it is safe, I can rest easy.

What’s on this hard drive? My life history in photos and videos, as well as other documents like my resume. Each year of my life is represented and recounted in the numerous folders on this device. It holds memories of me from my parents perspective from before my own memory began saving events and details. It’s an easy way to walk down memory lane when I’m feeling nostalgic. If I’m trying to recall details of a specific memory, I can quickly find the documentation that I have of that event. It’s like a living journal that visually conveys the emotions I have felt and shows the things that I’ve seen. It automatically highlights what was important to me at various times in my life because of the things that I decided to capture and preserve through digital media at the time.
Though I’ve never really understood where it comes from, I’ve had an inner drive from a young age to preserve my personal and family history. When I bought my first hard drive at about the age of 14, I was beyond excited. I don’t think it’s a common thing for a teenager to wish for a hard drive, but it meant a lot to me. I had been saving everything digital that I owned on the family computer which was quickly running out of storage space. Having my own portable space to keep all my digital treasures made me feel limitless. Several years later, I found that the storage space was running out yet again. I bought a new hard drive with triple the amount of space than the first hard drive, transferred everything from my old hard drive over to the new one, and wiped the old one clean. In the process, though, a folder was lost without me noticing. Several months after the transfer, I was looking for pictures from our family trip to Utah and Yellowstone but they were nowhere to be found. I was devastated. I can’t imagine how horrific it would be if I lost everything on my hard drive.

Into the Archives 70-Bad Hair Idea

Another ancient selfie from yours truly. I thing I was trying to curl my hair with pipe cleaners. Yeah, great idea, I know. Back in the day when my skin was clean, my freckles were darker and I had braces. Such carefree times. *siiiigh*

-----
This is the last ITA you will see for awhile. I will be taking a break for now but hopefully "season 3" will return sometime after my mission. If you really miss baby me, just go to youtube. There's plenty of laughs and awwws there.

Into the Archives 68-Swing Flip

One of my many secret talents is that I can do a flip off a swing. Actually, I'm not sure if I can anymore. Back in 2010 I could though.

Into the Archives 62-Breakfast and Curls

Since the day my hair was long enough, curlers were a big thing of my childhood. Every Sunday morning (and sometimes I'd sleep on them Saturday night) I'd eat breakfast and get ready for church while my hair curled.

Into the Archives 61-Another Day of Crazy Hair

Back in 2011 I did an ITA about crazy hair which included the cone head hairdo. Today, I have a picture of it for you. On this day, some time in 2009, EJ and I were coming up with a fun activity to do together. We decided on doing our hair like this and walking around the neighborhood to see peoples reactions. Sure enough, we got some strange looks and some good laughs.

Into the Archives 60-Silly Kids

I kind of forgot to post an ITA last week. Whoops. Anyway, just your typical sibling picture. It was taken at our dear friend, sister Allred's house after dinner. We always love dinner with her. Don't forget her famous rolls!

Is there actually a way to eat s'mores gracefully? I sure haven't found a way.

Into the Archives 55-Reading

I can't remember why we took this picture. I think it was for some project my mom was doing. In any case, this picture is so incredibly dorky that I had to share it for this week's ITA.

Into the Archives 51-Mothers Day

In honor of mothers day, here's to all the amazing and yet under appreciated mothers out there. This video is from 1999 (as it so conveniently says on the screen).

Rest in Peace, My Childhood

Growing up for me has been a rough concept. I don't want to leave the comforts of my childhood but I also don't want to look needy. I've shed more than a couple tears over this dilemma and pretty much everything that has to do with adulthood. Thursday night, with less than an hour until my 18th birthday, I wrote this poem-like piece. As I wrote it, I found myself coming more and more at peace with my situation. As I went back and read what I had wrote, I hardly edited it. Very uncharacteristic of me. I couldn't believe that I had just written it. I posted it on Instagram right at midnight but I thought I'd share it here too. Maybe year's from now, I'll look back, read it again and think its stupid but it's what got me through my 18th birthday, which I had been dreading for over a year. So here it is with a bonus of a slideshow for fun.

Rest in peace, my dear Childhood. You have served me well. So many happy memories of which many I could tell. Adulthood seemed so novel when I was young. Now it's daunting and scary as it drags me along without a choice. I don't want to go there.
Please take me back, my Childhood. I didn't appreciate you near enough. It was easy back then. There wasn't stress or a to-do list that stretched longer than I will live. Money wasn't a necessity but simply a toy and work was just chores around the house. Time came in great abundance and I could read silly fiction for hours. Schooling was simple and fun. Why did no one tell me that all of that would change so fast? To treasure it, to make it last?
Take me back, my beautiful childhood. I had no idea how much you spoiled me until recently. Now you lay down still, leaving me in the hands of this stranger named Adulthood. Are you sure I'm safe with it? How can I be sure? Oh please, talk to me just once more!
But wait, is that a heartbeat I hear? Is there life still left in you? Yes, come back! Your eyes open, just a crack. I grab your hand. You speak softly so only I can hear as you whisper in my ear. "Be strong, young woman. Take your memories with you and keep me in your heart, for this is just the start. Though I may be gone, my spirit will stay with you. Adulthood will lead you down many paths that I could never find. So many new opportunities that I could never give you. It's time to move on, now let me go. You have a new path to follow. Just don't forget me and you'll be fine. I love you, dear Child of mine."
My Childhood, you draw your last breath at midnight. A tear or two fall from my eyes as you slip away. I draw a shaky breath and gently rest your hand by your side. I stand and slowly face Adulthood. It's looks at me and smiles. Something is different. I realized I can become friends with it. Maybe it's not such a bad thing after all.
My childhood, you will be greatly missed. I will now rely on Adulthood to carry me through the rest of my life. Rest in peace, my Childhood. Your resting place is in my heart where you will never be forgotten.

The Superhero Project

My track friend Kailey and I had this idea and put it together into a video. It's silly and may not make any sense.

If you don't really care to watch the 20 minute version, here is the 6 minute version. Although I would watch the first minute of the long one because it has a better explanation as to what this project is.

Weather Update

Yes, yes it did end up snowing in May. Just like the forecast said.

Dear Mother Nature,

You do realize that April Fools Day was a month ago right? Maybe you know something we don't or have a bigger plan that we don't understand but snow in May isn't exactly normal or appreciated. Just thought we'd clarify that.

Thank you for your concern.

Sincerely,
The Humans (who are getting tired of your games)

Bipolar Forecast

This is the forecast for this week:

Let's go swimming on Wednesday, dance in the rain on Thursday and play in the snow on Friday.

Midwest weather, why? It's May. I don't want it to be summer yet and I really don't want it to be winter anymore. Can't we have a nice in between? Apparently not.

Happy May Day!

The Adventures of Mexican Driving

One morning, while still in Acapulco, I woke up at about 7am. I was a little annoyed because I actually had the chance of sleeping in that morning but, oh well. I later found out from my uncle that there had been a slight earthquake at about that time and that could have been the cause of my waking but I never felt anything. So here I was, awake and with nothing to do yet. My brain must have been in a extra creative mode because I picked up the pen and pad of paper on the table next to me and wrote this poem. I don't write poetry by the way. I've written probably 2 or 3 other poems in my life so this was pretty spontaneous.

Driving in Mexico

Those drivers in Mexico,
They make me crazy-o.
Some of the things they do,
Would make you crazy too.

Stop signs are optional.
Speed limits, no point at all.
Cutting me off is a daily event,
While trying not to crash into a vendors tent.

Buses blocking the road,
Trucks carrying over-sized loads.
The traffic is nuts,
And I go bumping through all the ruts.

A drive that should take me 20 minutes, easy,
Will take me an hour, IF I'm lucky.
Speed bumps are everywhere,
While potholes fly me through the air

Oh, how I want to go home!
Not stuck on this street where a million merchandisers roam.
Some people honk for the fun of it,
But me? I'm quite done with it.

By the way, who would be going through a gas station at 10km an hour?

One more random thing that has nothing to do with driving. Have you ever seen prepackaged toast in a vending machine? Neither had I.

Mini Stories From My iPod-February

I haven't posted much lately because life just gets in the way of life sometimes. Wait. That didn't make sense. Well you know what I mean but, yes, priorities get in the way of things you actually want to be doing. i.e. School v. blogging. Anyway this post is so I can share some interesting pictures that have taken on my iPod in the last few weeks or so. I will also be posting other ones of my family on our family blog.

While sitting in the library parking lot, I saw this dalmatian sitting in the drivers seat of a car. Who knows why, but I found it quite amusing. I got out of the car I was in and started inching towards this dog to take the picture. I probably would have gone right up to the car but I thought it might be awkward if the owner came out and saw me. Oh and this older lady was also watching me from her car and had the funniest look on her face. So yeah, I basically chickened out and this was the closest I got.
This is little Oden, our neighbors Siamese cat. I was pet sitting last weekend and I just love this cat. He's so loveable and he loves you back...even if you're a stranger. (Yes. I know he's standing on the toilet. Just ignore that!)
For my English/writing/literature (I still don't exactly know what to call it) class we have been reading Pride and Prejudice. Oh so many mixed feelings about this book by everyone. I'd say about 90% of the class didn't really like it. Um, yeah, I'm one of those people.
SO anyway, during government class yesterday we were working on a class project and two of the girls, who are also in the writing class, were writing on the whiteboard for us and...got a little bored. This little cartoon of Mr. Darcy showed up and I loved it! We all protested when Mrs. V. had to erase little Fitzwilliam.
And last night for our YW activity we decorated cakes. Just for fun! For all you Kid History fans out there, it says: "Sweetooth. It means U want SOME!" I thought it was the perfect quote to put on a cake piled high with frosting.

Timeline-2011

 HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Here is a (not so) quick but quickest overview of my 2011. If you want to know it all, just read my entire blog. Good luck!

February 11th: (which happens to be my brothers birthday) was when I started this blog! A very important event I'd say.

March 19: (no post) Stake Cinderella Ball

March 3rd: The beginning of Into the Archives. Over there under "Labels" is a tag called ITA. Click on that.
April 11th: I got the ultimate haircut of the decade! Actually I'm serious. I might not get my hair cut that short for at least 10 years. It could happen though. I'll have to see...

Mid-Mayish: I got my goodreads account. Yup that was a great idea! I'd sugest you get one if you haven't already.

May: Passed my first year of early morning seminary. Well OK maybe I did more then just pass seeing as I got the Stake Presidents award and all.

February-March-April-May: I LOVED track yet again! (That's 3 years of running yo!)

May 23rd: I turned 15.

Very end of May: Track awards ceremony.
June 10 & 11th: Stake YW 4th year high adventure-thingy.

June 20-24th: I rocked Stake YW girls camp as a 4th year...without a voice the entire time. More info if you read that post.

June 29: (no post) I went to the local amusement park for the first time (never having been on a roller coaster) and seriously had a blast! I had no idea how my body would react to roller coasters because my dad loves then and my mom doesn't so there was a 50/50 chance whether I'd survive through the day. Well...it stayed 50/50. I was feeling sick over half the time but I couldn't help it! I LOVED the big rides! My favorite was the Patriot. A crazy loop-de-loop-really-fast ride.

My least favorite? The Boomerang. After just once I was really sick and it happened to be right before lunch...which I didn't eat. After an hour of groaning and laying on a bench I got up and ate 2 cups of ice cream and was magically better! Who would have guessed?
During a break we had fun with everyone's phones:
When it got dark it was almost better than day light! The place looked like Christmas in June.
We were seriously there all day. About 10am-10pm. Turns out that is about the right time. Sick enough to want to go home but still satisfied that I had gone on all the rides I wanted to.

July 7-9th: Rode on school buses. AKA had a nice stake youth conference.
August 5-6th: Partied in Nauvoo with my "other ward".
August 9: (No post) Stake Seminary kickoff. (Seminary already?) We didn't do much but play on the playground...which turned out to be really fun!
October 13th: I started a blog that I post on daily. Mostly videos...but a few other things too. helloyoutube.blogspot.com

October 31: (no post) Seminary Halloween costume party. Everyone dressed up as someone or something from the Old testament. A few of them were a little stretched...

December 27: I got my YW Recognition Award

December 25: Christmas Day
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
2012 is going to be awesome! (unless we all die of course :D )

Who Coined the Phrase, 'Coined the Phrase?'

When you are bored, just search for "interesting questions". There are some classic ones that are boring. Then there are sites like this one:

Some are intriguing, some are a little weird and some are more like jokes.
Here are some examples:
A "Duh" moment: Why is there a disclaimer on the Allstate Auto Insurance commercials that says "Not available in all states"?

Joke: If pro and con are opposites, wouldn't the opposite of progress be congress?

Just Checking: In the song Yankee Doodle, is he calling the horse or the feather "macaroni"?

Tricky One: What do you do when you see an endangered animal that is eating an endangered plant?

One I've always wondered: How can something be "new" and "improved"? if it's new, what was it improving on?

Pun: If a kid refuses to sleep during nap time, are they guilty of resisting a rest?

Contradictory: Why does caregiver and caretaker mean the same thing?

Another one I've wondered: Why do we sing "Rock a bye baby" to lull a baby to sleep when the song is about putting your baby in a tree and letting the wind crash the cradle on the ground? What about most other nursery rhymes for that matter?

Yet another one I've wondered: If parents say, "Never take candy from strangers" then why do we celebrate Halloween?

And here are some other ones if you don't end up checking that site out.
Is there ever a day that mattresses are not on sale?

How come toy hippos are always blue, or purple, when real hippos are brown?

Why do they say a football team is the 'world champion' when they don't play anybody outside the US?

If a bunch of cats jump on top of each other, is it still called a dog pile?

On Gilligan's Island, how did Ginger have so many different outfits when they were only going on a 3 hour tour?

Doesn't a lightning rod on top of church show a lack of faith?

Even if you don't know the answer to these questions, its still fun to think about them.

Kid History-New Shirt

If you haven't see Kid History by now I consider you a sinner. Just kidding.

But if you haven't, you should just YouTube it. Like...right now.

Now if you haven't seen their merchandise then you are also missing out:

A few weeks ago I received my first KH shirt! Thank you Jen!

(quote from episode 6)
Photography by my nutty brother KEW.

AND if you haven't already seen it a few times, episode 7 is here!

Into the Archives 38-Balloon Gum

11/17/2011

Do you remember when you were little and you pretended a balloon was bubble gum? Yeah I think most kids do that some time or another. We are no exception. Come to think of it, I think I still might do it every once in a while... Just kidding! Or am I?

Happy 11!

I have been doing special posts about a favorite author of mine (and one of her projects that has to do with today) on my Media Blog. Head on over there to find out more!
Also our school group is doing this project today:
